n the previous chapter we discussed the two types of construction
types for hardwood flooring. In this chapter we will discuss the 3 types of cuts used in hardwood flooring manufacturing.
The wood cut refers to the angle in which a board is cut and this can make a big difference in how the final product looks.
Wood flooring is either Plain sawn, Quarter sawn or Rift Sawn.
Quarter sawn - Quarter sawing produces less board feet per log than plain sawing and is therefore more expensive.
Quarter sawn wood twists and cups less and wears more evenly. Quarter sawn lumber has the growth rings of the tree
approximately perpendicular to the boards surface, again in contrast to plain sawn which has the growth rings
parallel to the boards broad face. Quarter sawn lumber is achieved by cutting the log first into quarters. Each
quarter is then processed by cutting a single board off of one face, then cutting the next board from the opposite face.
Quarter sawn produces both quartered and rift sawn lumber.
